I write and edit technical documentation and other copy for financial services and other business clients.

I'll either write your copy from scratch, or enhance your existing content using meticulous professional copy editing or proofreading.

You'll benefit from my 30+ years of experience and expertise in financial services risk, regulatory and governance: see page ABOUT for more details.

I'm a Professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP, formerly SfEP) and have done extensive CIEP training and mentoring. I'm also a member of the Professional Copywriters Network.

As well as finance and business editing, I also offer fiction manuscript report and developmental editing services.

I focus on first-time and indie authors who want to submit their MS to agents or publishers.

My copywriting prices vary according to the complexity and delivery timeline, but typically range from £50 to £75 per hour gross, including research, writing and agreed editing time.

But I can also price based on a day-rate, by project, or by wordcount: it depends on the job.

Illustration: assume a copywriting commission for a 5000 word white paper @ £60 per hour gross. Assume 15 hours research, 10 hours writing (average 500 wph) and 10 hours editing. I would quote an illustrative rate of: 35 * 60 = £2,100.

[Note: this is for illustration only: actual figures may vary from this example.]

My non fiction editing prices vary according to the complexity and delivery timeline, but are typically based on CIEP suggested minimum rates, namely around the range £25 to £35 per hour gross.

I can price based on a day-rate, by project, by hour, or by wordcount: it depends on the job.

Illustration: assume a copy editing commission of 20000 words @ £30 per hour gross @ 1500 wph. I would quote an illustrative rate of: 20000 / 1500 * 30 = £400.

[Note: this is for illustration only: actual figures may vary from this example.]

Manuscript reviews & developmental editing

I offer developmental editing services to independent fiction authors; along with associated line editing and copy editing services (by special agreement).

  • Clients, genres & focus
  • - I like to work with 'non-professional' or first-time fiction authors aiming to get their MS in good enough shape to submit to agents or publishers.
  • - I don't specialise in any particular genre, but have aptitude and some experience in the literary fiction, thriller and mystery genres.
  • - My focus is on basic elements of fiction theory: overall coherence, structure, plot, point of view, characterisation, pacing, dialogue and style fundamentals.
  • Editing process
  • - Before starting work, I ask the author to fill out a short questionnaire to ensure a good fit, clear alignment and mutual understanding of the terms of the assignment.
  • - Once the scope is agreed and documentation signed, the editing process involves five possible stages: 1-2 are core stages, 3-5 are optional:
  • 1. Initial read of MS
  • 2. Manuscript report
  • 3. Full developmental edit
  • 4. Line edit OR copy edit
  • 5. Final review + style sheet
  • Training & experience
    • - On top of my CIEP copy editing training, in April-May 2020 I attended the Liminal Pages Developmental Editing In Practice course, run by star fiction editor Sophie Playle.
    • - In 2020 I performed an MS review and subsequent line edit of a 99,000 word MS by a debut indie author: a what-if/alternative reality thriller.
    • - The MS is being submitted to agents, and is in good shape to be self-published if that route is needed or preferred.

My fiction editing prices vary depending on which of the five editing stages are in scope.

  • Stage 1: Initial read of MS. Based on MS wordcount, plus time incurred for verbal feedback.
  • Stage 2: MS report. Based on report wordcount. Includes an Excel summary 'dashboard' of key MS elements.
  • Stage 3: Full developmental edit. Based on time incurred (which can be estimated in advance).
  • Stage 4: Line edit or copy edit. Based on time incurred (which can vary according to the required rate of intervention).
  • Stage 5: Final review + style sheet. Based on MS wordcount.

An illustrated example follows, for an 80000 word MS, assuming a 12-page manuscript report and a per hour gross rate of £30. [Note: this illustration assumes all five stages are in scope. Some projects will involve only stages 1-3.]

  • 1: 80000 / 6000 wph * £30 + 1 hour feedback @ £30 = £430
  • 2: 12 pages @ 1 hour per page = 12 * £30 = £360
  • 3: 80000 / 3000 wph * £30 = £800
  • Total stages 1 + 2 + 3 only = £1,590
  • 4: 80000 / 2500 wph * £30 = £960
  • 5: 80000 / 10000 wph * £30 = £240
  • Total stages 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = £1,590 + £960 + £240 = £2,790

The likely estimated costs are presented to the author by email at the quote stage, including any ranges or underlying assumptions that could give rise to different overall charges.

For new clients a deposit of 33% of the estimated total cost is usually required before work is started.
